The biphasic effect of copper on growth and mineral uptake and the amelioration of its inhibitory effect by iaa on two broad bean cultivars

The effect of exogenous IAA application and copper treatment on the growth and the absorption of potassium, calcium and magnesium of two broad bean cultivars (cv. Assiut 84 and cv. Assiut 125) was studied. The two broad bean cultivars responded differently to copper or copper and IAA treatments. In cv. Assiut 84 the dry matter yield of stems and leaves increased progressively up to 200 ppm Cu, then a slight promotion was exhibited in leaves (4% of control) and a slight reduction was detected in stems. The dry matter of roots remained mostly unchanged up to 200 ppm, then a slight reduction was exhibited (about 26%). In the cv. Assiut 125 the dry matter of leaves and stems were stimulated up to 200 ppm, then a marked and similar reduction was exhibited (30%). The dry matter of roots was inhibited markedly by copper. This indicated that the cv. Assiut 84 was more Cu- tolerant while the cv. Assiut 125 was Cu- sensitive. The differences in copper tolerance among the two selected cultivars was also recommended by the accumulation of potassium, calcium and magnesium, that while the cv. Assiut 84 accumulated sufficient amounts of these elements, the cv. Assiut 125 did not. IAA treatments considerably increased the accumulation of dry matter yield of the two cultivars which consequently enhanced the uptake of these minerals. The correlation between the differences in the growth criteria as well as cation uptake was interpreted.
