Developmental competence of prepubertal goat oocyte is low probably due to the large number of small oocytes present in ovary. To overcome this problem, Wu et al. (2006) used growth medium (GM) during first 24h of in vitro maturation (IVM) and they improved embryo development of porcine small oocytes. The aim of this study was to test the GM in small prepubertal goat oocytes in order to increase blastocyst yield. Cumulusoocyte Complexes (COCs) were recovered from prepubertal goat ovaries, selected and classified into two categories based on oocyte diameter: <125 microm and >=125 microm. Big oocytes were matured in conventional IVM medium (CM) and the small oocytes in: CM; Growth medium (GM); modified conventional IVM medium (MCM) and modified growth medium (MGM). Oocytes were fertilized for 24h with a sperm concentration of 4x10E6 spz/ml. Presumptive zygotes were cultured in synthetic oviductal fluid (SOF) for 8 days. Cleavage rate, blastocyst rate and blastocyst mean cell number were influenced by oocyte diameter, presenting the largest oocytes (>=125 microm) the highest results. However, the culture the culture of small prepubertal goat oocytes in GM, MCM and MGM failed to improve blastocyst rate.
