Organic matter degradation in anaerobic conditions leads to the generation of volatile fatty acids, carbon dioxide, hydrogen and methane. Moreover, the methane produced by methanogenic archea is a greenhouse gas, being anaerobic degradation during manure storage one of major methane emission sourceswithin livestock production. The objective of this study was to evaluate methanogenic activity in rabbit manure and laying hen manure using in vitro techniques based on gas accumulation, to measure biogas (methane and carbon dioxide) production and determine manure physico-chemical composition. Manure from eight different farms was sampled and introduced in batch anaerobic incubators, stored at 35 deg C. Manure composition showed significant differences (P < 0.05) on total solids, volatile solids, pH and fibre content between species, being higher in rabbit manure compared with laying hen manure, whereas total Kjeldahl nitrogen content was significantly lower (P < 0.05) in rabbit manure. The biogas values varied from 341 to 207 L biogas/kg VS. Methane emissions from rabbit manure were significantly lower (P < 0.05) compared withlaying hen manure.
