Energy crops used for biogas production should provide high organic dry matter yield and high methane output per unit area. Maize (Zea mays L.) is recognized as suitable substrate for biogas production. The paper aimed to determine impact of hybrid, harvest timing, and ensiling on maize yield and organic dry matter content at harvest for biogas production. Field trial was carried out in Research and Study farm ''Vecauce'' of the Latvia University of Agriculture (LLU) in 2008 and 2009. Ten (in 2008) till eleven (in 2009) maize hybrids with different maturity rating according FAO numbers (FAO 180 – 340) were harvested at three different times beginning on 5 September at 14-day intervals. Our results showed that organic dry matter (ODM) content as well as ODM yield depended on harvest time and increased substantially (p is less than 0.05) from early September till early October. A high correlation between ODM content of fresh and ensiled samples was noted. Methane yield per ha increased above 6000 Nm3 haE-1 in 2009 when special high-yielding hybrids were used.
