Recently total area of buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum) has increased notably in Latvia, including Eastern part of country, but there is a lack of information about buckwheat growing, optimal sowing time and seeding rates. The aim of the study was to investigate problems in buckwheat growing in the Eastern-Latvia. Interviews of eight major buckwheat growers in Eastern-Latvia were made in 2009 and 2010 to find out the most important problems of buckwheat growers. The growers were chosen by following criteria: at least 10 ha of buckwheat sown area, crop is used for seed or food, buckwheat is grown using conventional, organic or integrated method. Results of interviews showed, that the most popular variety among growers is 'Aiva'. In some farms 'Anita Belorusskaja' has been grown also, because of consideration that this variety gives higher yield in less fertile soils, but it mature later, than variety 'Aiva'. The best place for buckwheat in crop rotation is after winter crops, but five growers sow buckwheat after spring crops, also after oats, and just three growers place buckwheat after well fertilized winter crops. Time of sowing was different, but all growers generally agree, that the best time is as early as possible, but thus there is a risk of late spring frosts. Fertilization and weed control are important factors for buckwheat growers. Yield of buckwheat was different: two growers harvested 0.8 - 0.9 t haE-1 in 2009, but the best yield was obtained in farm ''Kalnavoti'' (Koknese municipality) - on average 2 t haE-1.
