One of the most important ground resources in Latvia is groundwater. Intensive agriculture and inappropriate animal husbandry are the main concerns for decreased water quality. Observations show that higher nitrate nitrogen concentrations are closer to earth surface. The future increase of the groundwater levels and subsurface drainage runoff during the winter will provoke migration of the nutrients because of retention processes. As the consequence of the increased maximal groundwater table in the summer, it will cause possible dispersion of the nutrients in the soil located closer to the earth surface.
