The fluorescence behaviour of humic acids from peat in comparison with that of reference samples and their trace metal complexes was studied. Complexation intensity appeared to be related to the nature and origin of HA samples. As expected, a strong quenching effect was observed after interaction with each metal ion. Fluorescence quenching measured for complexes of HAs at the increasing metal ion concentration was linearly correlated with metal concentration in the complex. The different capacity to interact with metal ions exhibited by various HAs can be attributed to their different molecular complexity. Fluorescence spectroscopy is a simple and reliable tech technique that allows the direct measurements of the complexing capacity of humic macromolecules with different metal ions at different concentrations.
