Mapping the changes of swidden cultivation area in a Khmu village of Northern Laos

The changes of swidden cultivation were mapped in a Khmu village of Namha Biodiversity Conservation Area in northern Lao PDR. In 2004, mapping was done by direct ground survey with Global Positioning System (GPS). Fields were identified with cultivators on Quick Bird Satellite Image. In 2005, 94 HH (household) opened 98 plots of swidden cultivation, equivalent to 143.63 ha in total. On average, one HH opened 1.53 ha in 2005 and 0.91 ha in 2004. Introduction of cash crop such as maize increased the size of field per HH by 50% within a year. Monitoring by mapping should be continues to assist villagers for appropriate land use planning and to avoid unnecessary conflict with conservation area management. By combining GPS ground survey and high spatial resolution satellite image, the changes of swidden cultivation fields can be mapped accurately within limited time. Feasibility of applying this mapping method for local land use planning is also dis cussed.
