Engkabang (Shorea macrophylla) : antioxidant evaluation

Three parts of Engkabang fruits; sepal, pericarp and seed were tested for antioxidant properties using 3 bioassays, i.e., Autoxidation of Linoleic Acid in a water-alcohol system, Xanthine/Xanthine Oxidase (X/XOD) initiated Superoxide Scavenging and DPPH (1,2-diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazyl) Radical Scavenging. Antioxidant evaluation was carried out with crude methanolic and water extracts on these 3 bioassays at concentrations of 20, 250 and 0.5 ug/ml respectively. From the study, it was found that the water extract of sepals showed high activity in both Superoxide Scavenging and inhibiton of Autoxidation of Linoleic Acid, i.e., 98.7% and 98.2% respectively. Both water and methanolic extracts of the pericarp showed high Superoxide Scavenging and DPPH Radical Scavenging activities, i.e., 98.5% and 96.9%, respectively for methanol, and 92.9% and 99.4%, respectively for water. As for the seeds, both methanolic and water extracts showed high DPPH Radica l Scavenging activity, i.e., 98.3% and 94.4% respectively. The methanolic extract also showed high Superoxide Scavenging activity of 92.5%. However, further investigation on toxicity needs to be carried out before Engkabang fruits can be promoted as a natural source of antioxidants.
