Status of forestry research and education in India

This paper discusses about the status of forestry research and education in India. Specifically, it revolves around the history of forestry research, the changing roles of forests in view of climate change phenomenon, and the different constraints in promoting forestry. This paper also highlights the role of forestry and education in achieving sustainable development and the emerging issues confronting the forestry sector vis-a-vis the regional and global requirements of the 11th Plan Document of the Government of India. Finally, this paper suggests for new strategic knowledge, quality and need-based research, education, extension and technical operation programs to address the national goals. These mechanisms and strategies include among others the quality manpower, specific research agenda infrastructure and scientific deliberations.
