Although not abundant, Korea has unique breeds of native animal genetic resources that have been maintained for a long period of time. Industrialization came as a mixed blessing for Korean native livestock. At the start of industrialization, most of native breeds faced extinction, while foreign commercial breeds took over as a major food sources. However, after the industrialization a shift in the demand preference for livestock product from quantity to quality led to the resurgence of native breeds as high quality products. Armed with product traceability and improvement system, Korean native beef cattle (Hanwoo) is now competing with foreign beef cattle breeds. Korean native chicken breeds that once faced extinction were revived and became a source of farm income for smallholders. While maintaining diversity and purity of native livestock, conserving and promoting commercialization of native livestock will be huge challenge in the coming years.
