Promising lines of legume crops for Ilocos [Philippines]

Peanut, mungbean, and soybean are important leguminous crop that can be easily integrated in crop-based farming systems in North Luzon [Philippines]. However, one of the major constraints to the production of these crops is the limited availability of quality planting materials. To address this problem, Sugui et al. (Mariano Marcos State Univ., Batac, Ilocos Norte, Philippines) evaluated new improved lines of peanut, mungbean, and soybean in Ilocos Norte from Oct. 2005 to May 2009 as part of the National Cooperative Testing of the National Seed Industry Council-Field Legumes Technical Working Group (NSIC-FLTWG). Peanut lines MMPn 93871, MMPn 95111, and CLPn 3 gave consistently high pod and seed yield during the wet and dry season croppings from 2005 to 2009. During the WS [wet season], pod yield of 1.53-1.92 t/ha and seed yield of 1.12-1.40 t/ha were obtained from the three peanut lines. During the DS, pod yield of 2.03-2.20 t/ha and seed yield of 1.45-1.56 t/ha were obtained. A yield increase of 13.33-41.48% during the WS and 18.71-28.65% during the DS were computed per hectare compared with the check variety, NSIC Pn12. The peanut varieties were moderately resistant to cercospora leaf spot and rust. Mungbean lines MRD Mg 97 11-10 and EGM 93 308-1 produced 1.15-1.18 t/ha of good quality seeds compared with the check variety, NSIC Mg 13 with 1.11 t/ha. Likewise, the mungbean lines were resistant to lodging. None of the new soybean entries (LGSY 50227, LGSY 90088-8, LGSY 50259, and EGSY01 04-71) exceeded the yield of the regional check variety, PSB Sy2, which produced an average seed yield of 2.25 t/ha. Growing these promising peanut and mungbean lines in Ilocos can give higher income ranging from Php. 20,775/ha to Php. 44,153/ha or an income of Php. 0.60 - Php. 1.19/peso invested.
