Study on production and marketing patterns of small ruminants in district Mithi

Survey was conducted in the year 2008 using 76 agents involved in production and marketing process which included 26 goat/sheep farmers/producers, six wholesalers, 17 commission agents and 27 final sellers from three talukas i.e. Mithi, Nangarparkar and Diplo talukas. 84.62 % of the respondents were illiterate and 72.36% were married. They housed their sheep in open fenced structures and goats were reared under some temporary shelter. The average flock size in the district was 520 animals and the number of sheep in most of the flocks was higher than goats. In sheep, Dumbi and Kajli, while in goats Tharki, Tapri and Pateri were the common breeds. The average recurring cost was Rs.4867.60/animal which included Rs.4502.34, 126.07, 120 and 119 as feeding costs, veterinary charges, marketing expenses and labour charges, respectively.
