Effect of botanical pesticides against mealy bug on cotton
2009
Arain, M.I.
To evaluate the efficacy of various botanical pesticides (Neem oil, Neem seed extract, Tobacco extract and Garlic extract) against mealy bug cotton crop was sprayed and observation on mealy bug population was recorded after 24, 72 hours, one week and two weeks after spray. The mealy bug population in October started decreasing (489/plant) and reached to 86/plant in the month of November. This showed that September and October arc the months of its peak population. The mortality of mealy bug on cotton varied significantly (P less than 0.01) for botanical pesticides after 24 hours of their application and spraying cotton with Tobacco extract (2.0%) caused highest mortality (98.60 %) of mealy bug, where its population reduced to 5.0/plant over pre-treatment population of 386.7/plant. Neem oil (1%) proved to be most effective after Tobacco extract causing 89.32% mealy bug mortality. Neem extract (2%) ranked third in relation to of efficacy with insect mortality of 80.37%.
