Heat stress is a stringent factor for plant growth in arid and semi-arid regions of the world. In view of the gradually increasing heat stress, it is imperative that plant responses to heat stress may be comprehensively understood and strategies may be adopted to alleviate its adversaries in order to obtain satisfactory crop stand. In this study some physiological changes in barley seed and seedlings under heat stress and effectiveness of KNO3 in alleviation of heat stress has been studies. Results of this study revealed that seed pretreatment with KNO3 reduced seed ion-leakage and MDA content but did not affect H2O2 level in comparison with water treated seed. Fatty acid profile of seed indicated that palmitic and stearic acid contents were increased, oleic acid and linoleic acid remained unchanged while linolenic acid content decreased upon seed treatment with KNO3 as compared to water-treated seed.
