Oestrosis is a myasis that affect ovine and caprine, although humans can also be infested (Scala et al. 1999). Adult flies deposit the juvenile stages in the nostrils of sheep, these larvae migrate actively into nasal cavities and molt to second instar. The nasal discharges and sneezing constitute the major clinical signs of O. ovis infection in sheep and goats, but a defined relation to larval burden is still not known. We considered interesting to investigate nasal discharge symptom and level of IgM and IgG antibody response. During an investigation on the existence of genetic variation in resistance/susceptibility to Oestrus ovis infestation, these two diagnostic approaches were investigated. Results of our preliminary study seem to confirm that IgG response against L2 excretory/secretory antigen is related to larval growth, and that IgM class is related to first instar larvae accumulation. The nasal discharge seems to follow seasonal variation of larval distribution, but in this study a clear relation with antibody response could not be highlighted. These two diagnostic approaches to Oestrosis, seem to be useful when considered independently. Genetic analysis (as QTL detection), in which data of the present study will be included, are important to add details in the oestrosis pathophysiology. Furthermore in our results values of IgM antibody response, if only slightly and not directly associated with the highest score values, lead us to considered these two parameters interesting to investigate in further surveys especially planned for clinical and sero-epidemiological measurements.
