The goal of the study was to determine the mode of inheritance, gene effect, genetic variance components, combining abilities, average contribution of tester lines and their interaction in the expression of plant height, stem thickness, leaf length and width, yield of green and dry biomass, protein and cellulose content in the F1 generation of crossing of grain sorghum and Sudan grass. The method of line x tester analysis was applied. The experimental material consisted of highly genetically divergent grain sorghum A-lines used as family lines and three Sudan grass R-lines used as testers along with their 24 F1 hybrids. There were significant differences in the average values of all examined characteristics of all genotypes. The results of the analysis of variance of combining abilities show that there are significantly high differences for GCA and SCA, that non-additive component of genetic variance (dominance and epistasis) has higher proportion in the total genetic variance of all examined characteristics except plant height and cellulose content where both components, additive and non-additive, were included in the control of inheritance. The greatest contribution in the expression of plant height, leaf length, leaf width, green biomass yield, dry biomass yield and cellulose content was in testers, while the greatest contribution in the expression of stem thickness and protein content was in the interaction line x tester, while the contribution of lines was less significant.
