Influence of weed control chemicals on vegetative habit of young sweet cherry plantations

The experiments were carried out over 2005-2006 in a collection plantation of the Fruit-Growing Institute in Plovdiv (Bulgaria). The influence of weed control chemicals on vegetative habit of young sweet cherry trees grafted on the three different rootstocks - Mahaleb, wild cherry and Gizela 5, was studied. Early in spring, before the beginning of growing period the inter-row soil was treated with soil herbicide pendimethalin - Stomp 33 EC - 4.0 l/ha. A doubled treatment with leaf total contact herbicide Diquat, Reglon forte - 3.5 l/ha against secondary weed infestation was applied during growing period. External symptoms of phytotoxicity and suppression in tree growth after pendimethalin (Stomp 33 EC - 4.0 l/ha) treatment were not observed. There were no significant changes in the content of leaf pigments. A depressing effect on tree growth expressed by the annual shoot length increment and the stem cross section area was not detected. The following herbicides are recommended in young sweet cherry plantations for the control of weeds: pendimethalin - Stomp 33 EC - 4.0 l/ha in early spring, and Diquat, Reglon forte - 3.5 l/ha during growing period.
