Exploitation of thermo-mineral water in Banja Koviljača for the purpose of spa-therapeutic treatments lasts more than 100 years, and, also, during the same period, researches were done in this area. Unfortunately, recent researches have not been successful in answering on one of basic questions which is genesis of thermo-mineral water. Recent approach to research was based on the assumption that thermo-mineral water of Banja Koviljača are being formed within Mesozoic (Cretaceous and Triassic) limestone and that from there it flows into the alluvium of the river Drina, from where it was exploited until 1991. Because of that, large number of deep wells and boreholes were drilled in Cretaceous and Triassic limestone, aiming to abstract thermo-mineral water from primary collector, and at the same time to get water with higher temperature. This works did not give expected results, in other words it turned out that Mesozoic limestone were not the primary collector of thermo-mineral water. This work points to a new approach to the above mentioned problems, emphasizing the determination of significance of Tortonian Lithotamnum limestone in the formation of thermo-mineral water in Banja Koviljača. In that sense, research intended for a specific purpose is suggested, in the area between the river Drina and Banja Koviljaca, in other words in the zone of alluvium deposit where springs and groundwater lakes with sulfureous water existed back in 19th century.
