Producing first-class sweet cherries: integrating new technologies, germplasm, and physiology into innovative orchard management strategies

This paper will briefly review some current objectives of North American cherry breeding programs, and compare the performance of some standard and new varieties grown under protected cultivation in high tunnels. The fundamental growth characteristics and fruiting physiology of sweet cherries will then be explored, to provide the foundation for understanding and implementing new tree training systems and innovative orchard management strategies. Focusing on a simplified fruiting unit within the tree reveals several populations of leaves and fruit that are interdependent and should be optimized collectively.
