This study provides an overview of the vegetative rootstocks used in Europe and worldwide that have not, however, been introduced in Serbia yet. The objective of this study is to provide as mush information as possible on major characteristics of selected vegetative rootstocks for cherries. These vegetative rootstocks should be checked and used under Serbian conditions in order to contribute to improving and intensifying cherry production. The vegetative rootstocks used in Europe differ in vigour and allow cherry growing at a planting density ranging from 300-400 trees/ha (rootstocks SL 64, Mazzard F 12 / 1, MaxMa 14, MaxMa 97) to 400-600 trees/ha (rootstocks CAB 6P, CAB 11E) to 800-1200 trees/ha (rootstocks Edabriz, Gisela 5, Weiroot 53). Less vigorous vegetative rootstocks can be used for cherries grown in dense plantations as dwarf and semi-dwarf trees (more than 1000 trees/ha), with high yields being obtained as early as the 3rd and 4th years after planting.
