The term dioxins usually refers to a family of polycyclic polychlorinated organic compounds, known as very persistent and bio accumulative, the toxic chemicals that all share a similar chemical structure and a common mechanism of toxic action. This paper aims to remind on the important problem of their presence in the environment, with the especial accent on human health, but also to illustrate the sources of their origination together with their environmental cycling. Moreover, since there is increased trend of their occurrence, this paper reflects some fact about these important pollutants both in Serbia and worldwide.
