Anaerobic digestion, as a fermentation process, is a general technology for filtering urban and industrial wastewater, which is not only reducing their negative environmental impact, but as result gives useful by-products in the form of biogas. This paper presents the mechanisms and the basics of the process of removing the organic fraction of pollution and other pollutants using anaerobic digestion. Regarding the wastewater treatment, an additional benefit of anaerobic processes is the reduction of total bio-solids volume by 50-80%, which is more than aerobic processes yield. The Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Bed Reactor (UASB) undoubtedly is by far the most popular anaerobic wastewater treatment system. The aim of this study is to assess the possibilities, and to propose using of anaerobic systems for treatment of municipal wastewater. Specific objective is to point out the highlights benefits of anaerobic processes in relation to other biological treatment of wastewater treatment.
