Autochthonous breeds as livestock potential in sustainable farming in Serbia

Autochthonous breeds and types of livestock in Serbia are considered to be severely endangered animal breeds. The most important mechanism of endangerment of autochthonous breeds in Serbia is uncontrolled cross-breeding with highly selected imported breeds. Some of autochthonous breeds are already extinct, such as Kolubara cattle. Other autochthonous populations are considered critical, constantly decreasing in number like Podolian Gray cattle, Busha and Lake Buffalo, Zackel sheep types (Vlaska Vitoroga, Lipa sheep, Bardoka, Pirot sheep etc.) and Balkan goat. The decreasing populations of various autochthonous breeds are recognized as important elements of agro-biodiversity, agro-ecosystems, natural and cultural heritage of Serbia. The most reliable strategy for conservation of autochthonous breeds is the promotion and the development of measures that favor the self-sustainability of the breed/s in traditional habitats. in aim to evaluate the endangerment status of local breeds in Serbia as well as the factors impacting the population size, characteristics of population/s and health status of the animals were determined in aim to develop decision-making tools and strategies designed to introduce and recommend development policies. There is the existing, though insufficient strategy for preservation and conservation of some autochthonous breeds implemented Serbia, according to the FAO criteria.
