Legal regulation of the area of biodiversity and nature conservation in general at the level of the Republic of Serbia has been improved by set of legal regulations adopted from May 2009 till present day. The new Law on Nature Protection was adopted in May 2009, in a package of new 'green' laws, which are harmonized with the EU legal regulations. The objectives of sector policies, among other things, are adoption of national strategy for sustainable use of natural resources and goods, as well as national strategy and action plan for biodiversity conservation. Number of relevant bylaws governing specific issues were adopted, too, and thereby enabled the implementation of national legislation on biodiversity protection matter. The most significant changes in the legislation, and of importance for the protection of biodiversity, done by the Law on Amendments to the Law on Environmental Protection concern the institutional framework, the responsibilities division, language change in flora and fauna conservation key elements' categorization, enhancement of the competent authority and powers of inspectors, liabilities to establish environmental funds by local governments and the autonomous province, a system of soil quality monitoring constitution, liabilities for degraded natural areas remediation and rehabilitation processes.
