Effects of differenct rates and time of application of zorial, in tank mixtures with diuron, on weed control in cotton

Weeds represent one of the major constraints to cotton production in the Sudan. The objective of the present investigation was to evaluate the effects of rate and application time on herbicidal efficacy of Zorial and Diuron tank mixtures in cotton. With one exception, irrespective of application time Zorial at 0.25-0.4 kg a.i./fed in tank mixtures with Diuron at 0.2kg a.i/fed resulted in satisfactory to excellent (65-100%) and lasting control of grasses. Early in the season, Zorial at 0.25-0.3 kg a.i./fed in tank mixture with Diuron applied 7 and 15 days prior to sowing resulted in moderate to satisfactory (55-62%) and good (73-77%) control of the broad-leaved weeds, respectively. Irrespective of application time, Zorial at 0.35-0.4 kg a.i./fed treatments resulted in excellent control (81-98%). Control of broad-leaved weeds late in the season was, however, poor to good (14-75%). The herbicide treatments significantly reduced percent ground covered by weed, weed air_dry weight and man-hours required for supplementary weeding. Zorial at 0.25 and 0.3kg a.i/fed+Diuron treatments applied 15 days prior to sowing without supplementary weeding resulted in weed biomass and seed cotton yield comparable to that of the unweeded control. Zorial at 0.25-0.35 + Diuron applied at sowing when supplemented by hand-weeding resulted in seed cotton yield comparable to that of Zorial at 0.4kg a.i/fed + Diuron applied at sowing with supplementary weeding
