This research aimed at investigating the effects of ozone on production and transformation of carbohydrate in cowpea. Plants were grew in the fumigating chambers which provided additional ozone at 40 and 70 ppb for 8 hours/day. The control group was exposed to ozone less than 10 ppb in Charcoal Filter chambers. Plant samples were taken, after exposed to ozone, at 1-week interval for analyses of soluble sugar, starch, chlorophyll and biomass. The results found that the soluble sugar and starch in leaves and root tissues decreased significantly as compared with the control group. Moreover, chlorophyll and biomass were also significantly affected by ozone. Notably, more severe effects were observed clearly in plant samples treated with 70 ppb O3 than 40 ppb O3. Level of ozone concentration and duration of ozone uptake showed influence on the amount of carbohydrate production. Finally, High concentrations of ozone decreased the production and formation of carbohydrate which coincided with the decrease in chlorophyll content.
