Different soil units are characterized with differences in soil texture, clay and organic matter content, pH, CEC etc., which are important criterions for soil taxonomy. Successful applications of near infrared NIR spectroscopy for measuring main soil properties have been reported. NIRS identifying of soil units has not been explored. The objective of this study was to investigate the possibilities of NIRS for classification of soil samples according to their soil types. A total of 191 samples from Chernozems,Vertisols, Luvisols and Fluvisols were collected. The spectral data of all samples were measured using FQA-NIRGun 600-1100 nm. SIMCA method was performed to classify samples on the base of spectral data in 600-1100 nm region. Four classes were formed on the base of soil type. Ten samples from each class were used as validation set. The remaining samples were used as calibration set for development of SIMCA models. SIMCA models correctly classified all samples from calibration set and most of the samples from validation set. Interclass distances between classes were from 3.08 to 25.15, which showed very good discrimination between classes. The results obtained confirmed that specific differences exist between spectral data of soils from the studied types and its possible to create models for their recognition.
