Organic Carbon Pools in Reclaimed Technosols from Chukurovo Mine Region

The present paper presents the organic carbon pools in reclaimed soils located in the Chukurovo mine region. One of the basic features of studied soils are the coal admixtures. They are abundant in soils and are its main organic pool during the first 20 years of the spoils biological reclamation. Coal fragments are slightly dissoluble and bioavailable components but provoke an extremely ligh content of organic carbon (16.6%). Thus far they are considered as a recalcitrant pool providing the ecologic sustainability of organic matter. The coal fragments as well as the humus systems admixed with them consist of humic acids mostly with high degree of condensation (the Welte coefficient D4/D6 varies 3-6). The acid pH affects the structure and properties of humic acids and leads to prevalence of their more labile forms. The trend of formation of labile pools of organic matter (free humic and fulvic acids content) is also established in surface horizons in a long term cultivation of soils.
