Development and testing of experimental sunflower hybrids obtained by using doubled haploid lines

The investigation was carried out at Dobrudzha Agricultural Institute, General Toshevo during 2009 and 2010. It involved 17 experimental sunflower hybrids, the father lines of which have been developed by the method of gamma-induced parthenogenesis. The hybrid combinations were tested by the block design method, in three replications, the size of the test plot of each replication being 7.35 m2. The following productivity indices of the hybrids were studied: seed yield - kg/ha, percent from the mean standard - %, oil percent in seed - %, oil yield - kg/ha, percent from the mean standard, as well as their resistance to economically important diseases on sunflower - downy mildew, phoma, phomopsis and the parasite Orobanche. The indices seed yield - kg/ha and oil yield - kg/ha were determined on 30 plants from each of the three replications. Oil percent in the kernel of the hybrid materials was determined applying MRI to each of the three replications. The resistance of the hybrids to the economically important diseases was studied in the Plant Protection Laboratory and in the infection fields of DAI, General Toshevo. All hybrid combinations demonstrated full resistance to downy mildew, and 12 of them showed full resistance to both downy mildew and Orobanche and moderate resistance to phoma and phomopsis. Four experimental hybrids were released which exceeded the mean standard by productivity indices during the two years of the investigation.
