In course of the research there were studied biometric parameters of plant development in autumn, change of the content and consumption of sugars by collection samples of winter rape (Brassica napus) of various ecological and geographical origins during the period of hibernation. The research was realized in the conditions of the Republic of Belarus in 2003-2007. During the research there were various weather conditions, especially during the periods of plant establishment and wintering. As a result of the research it was revealed that when sown in the optimum time winter rape always achieved optimal parameters of development. At less winter-hardy varieties (for example, Baldur (Germany), RPC 1985 (France), SI-506 (Czech Republic)) in the beginning of winter the sugar content was practically up to the standard or even above it. However, for the winter period the variety Leader in both terms of sowing consumed about 50% of the sugar sum, and the above-named varieties - 60-80% in relative expression. Hence, rewintering both at the standard and other varieties with similar intensity of sugar consumption was above. Most brightly this law was showed in difficult wintering in 2005-2006. Varieties less intensively consuming sugar during hibernation were distinguished by higher winter hardiness. Correlation between hardiness and the intensity of sugar consumption was revealed (r=-0.52).
