An annual average of over 50,000 tons of seed and propagation material was produced in Switzerland between 2005 and 2010. Seed certification and the seed testing laboratory at Agroscope Reckenholz- Tänikon ART Research Station help ensure that the quality of the seed produced in Switzerland is flawless and that variety-specific characteristics are retained throughout the propagation stages until seed usage. During the crop seasons of 2005 to 2010, an average of 7620 hectares were successfully tested for seed production (excluding seed potatoes). The high success rate of 95 % for cereals reflects the professionalism and reliability of producers. Seed testing laboratory analysis shows that crop quality is also excellent _ particularly for cereals, with an acceptance rate of 95,6 %. A continuing high seed replacement rate is contingent upon all players collaborating on the basis of technical expertise and individual responsibility, and upon transparent and efficient processes. Thus the future domestic seed production will also remain of high quality.
