Seasonal Fluctuation of the essential oil and it's major components in adapted Eucalyptus species in the tropical regions of Iran.

There are over 700 different species of Eucalyptus in the world, of which at least 500 produce a type of essential oil. The leaves and oils of many Eucalyptus species are especially used for respiratory aliments such as bronchitis and croup and the dried leaves are smoked like tobacco for asthma in some countries. Due tp European Pharmacopia the Eucalyptus oild with more than 70% 1,8-cineole can be used in medicinal products. In this research, seasonal variation in the essential oil content and composition of 14 Eucalyptus species from Kashan, 32 Eucalyptus species from Dezful and 38 Eucalyptus species from Shushtar were investigated. The seeds of these Eucalyptus species (Origin: Australia) were cultivated in the years 1993-1994 in Khuzistan in the western south and Esfahan in central regions of Iran. Some of these species have good adaptability with the climatic condition of this area (warm and dried weather). The leaves of these species were collected in the middle of four seasons (spring, summer, autumn and winter), for finding the best harvesting time for obtaining the highest oil yield and 1,8-cineole content. After drying the plant materials in shade, their essential oils were obtained by hydrodistillation. The oils were analyzed by capillary gas chromatography, using flame ionization and mass spectrometric detection. The results showed in each region some species contains more essential oils with higher percentage of 1,8-cineole in specific times, while some other species showed different variation that needs a longer period of study for finding the more clear results. In addition the results showed that some of these species are not suitable for cultivating in this regions because of low yield and quality of their oils.
