Assessing biological potential (microorganisms and mycorrhizal fungi) of Juniperus bed.

Assessing the long-term impact of anthropogenic activities on forest soil is difficult. Monitoring parameters such as tree growth or soil organic matter content is unsatisfied because it takes long time to reveal changes. Consequently, it has been proposed that soil quality be assessed using selected indicators related to soil microorganisms. Our aim was studying biological potential of soil at five juniper habitats including Sirachal (Tehran province), Layen (Khorasan province), Chaharbagh (Golestan province), Kanderagh (Ardebil province) and Chahartaghe Adaral (Chaharmahal va Bakhtiari province). At each site, four soil samples were randomly taken at depth of 0-20 cm. The activity of acid phosphatase, alkaline phosphatase and dehydrogenase were assessed under canopies and intercanopy in May and September. The enzyme activity was determined by reaction with substrate and spectrophotometer. Also, the effect of closure was assessed on enzyme activities at Chahartaghe Adaral. Our results showed that at Kanderagh and Chahartaghe Adaral, the activities of acid phosphatase were higher in under canopy soils except to Sirachal than inter canopy soils because of higher root exudates. The lower activity of acid phosphatase in under canopy soils But at Sirachal may be related to its closure for 45 years and higher density of plants at intercanopy sites. The activities of alkaline phosphatase and dehydrogenase were higher in soils under junipers that indicated more activity of microorganisms at this area. Acid phosphatase, alkaline phosphatase, and dehydrogenase activities were up to 1.5, 1.3 and 3 times greater under closure that shows the effect of it on plant and microbial activity. Colonization percentage of mycorrhizal fungi in juniper roots was not different significantly at studied habitats. This research show that soil enzymes were affected by climatic changes and plant cover and may be suitable indexes for monitoring soil ecosystem.
