Development of bread wheat genotypes for high yield and tolerance to heat and drought stresses in semi-warm dryland regions.

Wheat as a strategic crop involved most area of crop production and it should be increased through increasing of yield per unit area specially by identification of new wheat genotypes with high yield and tolerance to heat and drought stresses which have optimum level of agronomic traits with preference to existing cultivars. Tropical and semi-tropical regions with more than 1.2 million hectares and optimum rainfall have good potential for wheat production in dryland conditions. This regions include some parts of Golestan, Mazadaran, Ilam, khouzestan, Lorestan, Fars, Kohgiloieh and Boyrahmad and Kermanshah provinces. This research was done in Gachsaran, Khoramabad, Gonbad, Moghan and Ilam stations during five years (2003 _ 2008). Sixteen four projects through crossing blocks, segregating populations, selection of adaptability and yield stability of best genotypes in station and on-farm conditions in various climatically situations. During five years, among hundreds genotypes in different breeding levels, two improved lines (one of them a synthetic derivatives line) which purified in CIMMYT and ICARDA showed good adaptability and optimum levels of agronomic traits in most areas. These two lines showed preference in 5 and 1 percent significant probability levels in compare to checks (Zagros/Kouhdasht). Seed multiplication of these lines is being done. If these two improved lines will have high yield stability in different regions under various climatically conditions, they will introduce for planting in target environments.
