Development of diploid polinators resistant to Rhizoctonia

Root and crown rot of sugar beet caused by Rhizoctonia solani AG2-2, is one of the threatening factors in much sugar beet production areas. The best way for decreasing crop loss due to the disease, is resistant cultivation. To produce a resistant variety, development of a diploid pollinator was designated. In 2004, individual resistant plants of a resistant genotype were selected and selfed in the cages to produce S1 families. In 2005, S2 families as well as hybrids were produced by crossing S1 families with a male sterile single cross. In 2006, 68 hybrids accompany with domestic and foreign check varieties were compared in four separate experiments in Hamadan, Khorassan and Karaj locations. On the other hand, resistance of S2 families was evaluated in micro-plot conditions. Superior hybrids were selected based on their resistance and crop yield. The selected hybrids accompany with resistant and susceptible checks were compared in Khorassan and West Azarbayjan (infected fields with Rhizoctonia and Rhizomania) and Hamadan, Esfahan and Karaj (non-infected fields). At the same time, resistance of selected S2 families to Rhizoctonia was evaluated again in micro-plot conditions. Based on the two years performance of the hybrids and resistance evaluation, 9 S2 families were selected as best pollinators.
