Effect of harvest date and storage duration of sugar beet in two methods of on-farm storage on the root weight and sugar losses

The objective of present experiment was to study the effect of harvesting date and storage duration of sugar beet in two methods of on-farm storage on the both mass loss and sugar losses. A factorial split plot design with 9 replications in CRD was conducted during 2004-2005 in the experimental fields of SBSI of Iran, located in Karaj. Combination of two harvest dates (early October and November) and two on-farm storage methods (small pile in the field as a check (farmer method) and recommended pile close to the field) were arranged in the main plots. Four duration intervals of 2, 4, 6 and 8 weeks were arranged in the sub plots. Sugar beet seeds of commercial variety of Rasoul were sown on late March in a field with area of about 10000 m2. Beet roots were harvested based on recommended method of SBSI. About 25 sugar beet roots were placed in a plastic net bag as an experimental unit. Quality and quantity traits of beet samples were determined in all treatments, using standard methods. Sugar losses and mass loss of beet samples were determined relative to each harvest time, before storing sugar beet roots. The results showed that beet storage in both methods caused mass loss, mostly due to root dehydration. Mean mass loss of beet root in farmer method was 2.6 times greater than that of recommended pile method. During the two first weeks of storage both mass loss and sugar losses were significantly greater than that in the later weeks of storage. In conclusion, if farmer may to keep the harvested beet roots in the field, more than 9 days it is economic to store the beet roots in the recommended method of on-farm storage.
