Investigation of the effect of substituting corn with different levels of low tannin acorn on the performance of commercial laying hens.

Acorn which is the fruit of oak trees and provides from the forest, is new and uouconventiOnal energy source. In order to investigate the effect of different levels of low tannin acorn on the perfonnance of commercial laYing hens, the experiment Was conducted over sixteen weeks period with two hundred forty 36 weeks old white Leghorn hens. Diets containing 0, 16.5,33,50 and 67% low tannin acorn Were given to caged laying hens in second phase of egg production (weeks 36-52). The experiment was designed according randomized complete blocks design, with five treatments, four replications and twelve birds per replicate groups. All data for different parameters Were recorded daily, weekly or four weeks and summarized analysed for whole experiment period in second Phase of egg production (weeks 36-52). mortality rate and body weight were not significantly affected by the treatments, but egg production rate, egg weigh~ egg mass, feed intake, feed conversion efficiency by (P0.05) and egg number with (P0.01) Were affected by the experimental diets. Egg qnality characteristics including: egg weight, white weight, albumen heigh~ Haugh unit, yolk weight, yolk height, shell weigh~ shell thickness, shell strength, shell weight per unit surfuce area (SWUSA) and shape index were not significantly (P0.05) affected by the treatments but yolk colour by (PO.O 1) Was affected by experimental diets containing low tannin acorn seeds. Finally It can be concluded that experimental diets containig acorn, especially diet with 67 percent acorn caused significantly reduction of egg production rate, egg weigm, feed intake, egg mass, egg number, yolk colour and increasing feed conversion efficiency.
