Investigation on the effect of tiller number per hill rice stems borer population in paddy field of Mazandaran Province

Rice stem borer, Chilo suppressalis Walk. is the important pests of rice which introduced in 1972 to the region. Since introduced in the said year, chemical control has been the core of pest control measures. The reduce chemical application in the region; a study was conducted to find out the impact of hills density on the pest population dynamism. The experiment was designed in a split plot with two plantation methods as main effect and 4 levels of tiller numbers for hill (2, 4, 6 and 8). Farmer's conventional farming was considered as control. Sampling started from the beginning of the plantation and attributes such as dead heart and white head percents and also yield were measured. The results showed that plantation methods and tiller number per hills did not affect significantly the rice stem borer incidence. Therefore, the distance of 30 x 30 cm. and 50 x18 of plants on and between rows, respectively, would make no difference regarding the yield and pest damage. Thereby, the results of two years study would suggest the mentioned plantation method which in term grantee two yield despite of pest normal damage. This study was a part of UNDP/GEF/SGP project in Caspian Coast and supported financially by the said programme.
