Determination of optimum seed rate (row space and plant space on rows) for safflower

Optimum seed rate (row space and plant space on rows) through changing plant population and utilization of environmental resources affects yield components and seed yield. In order to investigate the impacts of optimum seed rate on yield components and seed yield, a randomized complete block design field experiment with 3 replication was conducted springsummer,2001 and 2002, at Dry land Agricultural Research InstituteSararood, (Lat. 34°20' N and Long 4i19' E), kermanshah, Iran. In this experiment first factor consisted of 3 row distances (30,40 and 50cm) and other factor consisted of 4 level of seed rate(20,30,40and50 secd/m"). In during groeth season was noted six traits: plant hieght, number of brench, number of head, number of seed/head, T .K. Wand yield. Optimum seed rate had significant effects on number of branches and head/plant. Increase in row space and decrease in seed rate enhanced in number of branches and head per plant. Number of branches and head per plant showed significant decreases with increasing seed rate. The decrease in grain yield in single plant was mainly due to greater number of plant per m2 leading to non-significant diffrence in grain yield among different seed rates. However 30 seed/m" with 30 em row space has higher yield (768 kg/ha) and 50 seed/m" with 40 em row space has lower yield (660 kg/ha). therefor 50 em row space with 30 seed/m" is recmended, because field mangement in this condition is easier than others.
