The goals of pea breeders are seed quality and such differences between pea varieties that the farmers could find the kind of pea they want. In 2010 there were trials performed using Priekuli Plant Breeding Institute pea collection (cv. ‘Retrija’, cv. ‘Bruno’, cv. ‘Zaiga’) and a number of hybrid line H. 86-19-3 at Priekuli Plant Breeding Institute, Latvia, and tested also at Jõgeva Plant Breeding Institute, Estonia, and Lithuanian Institute of Agriculture, Lithuania. The objective of the research was to compare the Latvian pea cultivars under the Lithuanian and Estonian growing conditions. The results characterized the vegetation period of peas, seed yield and its quality (1000 seed weight, protein content). In 2010 the productivity and quality of the products of pea varieties ‘Zaiga’, ‘Bruno’ and ‘Retrija’ were affected by high temperature in July that accelerated the ripening process. The test results show that the hybrid H. 86-19-3 is an early, short straw with the potential productivity of over 3.0 t haE-1 seed yield and protein content by 8% higher than the standard variety ‘Zaiga’.
