Comparative growth and fructification of the shiitake mushroom, Lentinula edodes, on rubberwood sawdust, palm fibres and grasses

Rubberwood sawdust has proved to be the best local agricultural waste for cultivation of the shiitake mushroom (Lentinula edodes). However due to a dwindling and irregular supply and a possible ultimate exhaustion, alternatives have to be found. Three strains of shiitake viz. L38, L272, L2161 were cultivated on rubberwood sawdust, palm pressed fibre (PPF) and five combinations of nine Malaysian grasses (Axonopus compressus, Cynodon dactylon, Imperata cylindrical (lalang), Panicum maximum, Digitaria longiflora, Eragrotis uniloides, Sporobolus indicum, Cyperus zollingeri and Pennisetum purpureum) to test for growth and fruiting characteristics. Cultivation on rubberwood resulted in significantly faster mycelial growth compared to PPF and grass substrates. Strain L38 required 36 days to colonize rubberwood while both L272 and L2161 needed 37 days. These rates except in L2161, were significantly faster than that on PPF substrate where strains L38, L272 and L2161 took 42.3, 41.0 and 38.5 days respectively. All strains grew faster on both sawdust and PPF compared to grass substrates where colonization took 50-102 days. However with respect to fructification, lalang produced the first pinhead (primordium) as significantly early as that of rubberwod (12 vs 16 days in L2161, 8.5 vs 6.3 days in L38). The biological efficiency (BE, yield) on lalang was also as high as high as that on rubberwood, with respective values of 23.3% and 21.8% in strain L38, and respective BE of 12.8% and 11.9% in strain L2161. This indicated great potential for lalang, a weed grass in abundant supply, to substitute rubberwood sawdust as a substrate for shiitake cultivation in Malaysia.
