Studies on the effect of soil media on the growth, oil yield, and chemical composition of sweet basil plants [Egypt].

This work was carried out at the Experiment Farm, the Faculty of Agriculture, Cairo University, in two successive seasons 1981 and 1982. This study done to determine the effect of clay ,sand, sawdust, peat moss and mixtures of these media on some characteristics, e.g. plant height, number of branches, herb production, oil yield, oil constituents, and elements content of Ocimum basilicum L. plants. The results obtained from this study could be summarized as follows: Plants grown in all clay of peat media (alone or mixed) resulted in tallest plants, whereas all sawdust media (alone or mixed) resulted in shorter plants. Number of branches/ plant increased by clay and peat media, however sawdust treatment lowered the number number of branches/ plant at most cuts. A mixture of clay + peat medium was most favourable medium used for herb production, whereas, sawdust medium produced the lowest plant weight in most harvests. Oil yield was increased by clay, clay + peat and sand+peat media, while a mixture of sawdust+peat medium gave the lowest oil yield in most cuts.
