The detection of 20 trace elements in 6,000 samples of 19 crops and 18,000 soil samples forms the basis of a government study to identify background or natural amounts of elements for a given crop under normal growing conditions, in order to understand the effects of other contaminants. Some of the crops under analysis are potatoes, lettuce, sweet corn, apples and rice. The samples are washed in pure water, dried and freeze-dried. Organic matter is then destroyed by a mixed acid digestion, a Teflon "bomb" using a heat process, or a sophisticated computerized 8,000 degree flame technique.
