Chemical properties of soils derived from volcanic ash in the Sierra Nevada were determined. These included extractable aluminum, phosphorus fixation, percent organic matter, cation exchange capacity and pH in NaF measured at different time intervals (2, 20, 40 and 60 minutes). The purpose of the study was to establish the relationship between the pH in NaP and the other chemical properties, as well as to identify an easily obtainable parameter for the characterization of andisols. Results were analyzed using correlation matrices and regression models, The closer relationships were found between organic matter content and pH (NaF) and extractable aluminun and pH (NaF). However, the time interval for reading the pH was different from that established by some researchers and agencies devoted to the analysis of this soil type.
