Nutritive value of triticale in pigs as a function of its chemical composition.

A trial was carried out with 48 growing pigs in order to determine the digestibility of organic matter or crude protein, as well as the digestible and metabolizable energy values of seven triticale cultivars. For one of these varieties, two samples were obtained. The crude protein content of the samples ranged from 12.9 to 16.2 percent of dry matter. The relationship between energy values and the concentration of the main chemical constituents of the seeds (crude fiber, ADF, crude protein, etc.) was established. The most accurate correlations were obtained between crude fiber content and digestibilities (0.99 for digestible energy vs 0.88 and 0.92 for crude protein and organic matter, respectively). Neither the crude protein content nor the protein fraction profile had any significant effect on digestibility. It was concluded that the digestibility of these cultivars in pigs and their energy values are essentially linked to the chemical composition and are not a varietal character.
