Evaluation of the rate and duration of grain filling in triticale and its association with agronomic traits.

Compared to other small grains, triticales have long grain filling periods. In order to study the factors influencing grain filling (GF), trials were sown under varying moisture regimes in northern and southern Mexico in 1989/90. Biomass at various stages of development, agronomic traits and grain yield were measured. Duration of the vegetative phase under drought positively influenced accumulated biomass, 1000-grain weight (TGW) and rate of GF but did not influence the duration of GF. Early flowering was associated with longer Gf under full irrigation and higher yield under drought. Under moisture stress, height was positively correlated with grain yield, TGW, number of kernels/spike, test weight and rate of GF. Tillers/m2 were negatively associated with TGW and rate of GF in stressed conditions. Heritabilities were higher for rates of GF than duration of GF, reflecting the strong correlation between TGW and rate of GF. To reduce GF duration, selection for GF rate, or indirectly for TGW, may result in faster progress.
