Dynamics of cellulose, fat and protein contents in fibre and seed during upland cotton boll development.

Two cultivars of upland cotton (PD9223 and Xuzhou 514) quite different in fibre strength were selected to study cellulose, soluble carbohydrate and protein contents in the fibre cells and fat, protein, saturated fatty acid and unsaturated fatty acid in the embryos during boll development. The data showed that there were exponential function relationships between boll age and the contents of cellulose, soluble carbohydrate, and parabola relationships between boll age and protein in fibre cells and fats, unsaturated fatty acid in embryos. During boll development, there was no sinificant correlation between cellulose content in fibre cells and protein, saturated and unsaturated fatty acid in embryos. However, highly significant and significant correlations were found between cellulose content in fibre cells and soluble carbohydrate, protein in fibre cells and fat content in embryos. The grey relational analysis showed the strongest correlation between cellulose content in fibre cells and fat content in embryos. There might be no competition between the two through boll development. If this is the case, it will be possible to improve fibre quality and oil content in cotton seed simultaneously by improving the techniques of cotton culture.
