Influence of partial defoliation, time of intercropping, and alternative trellising schemes on the performance of corn and pole sitao cropping system.

Partial defoliation did not affect yield of corn but considerably increased the light transmission through the corn canopy. This in turn significantly increased the yields of pole sitao intercropped at 20 and 40 days after corn emergence (DACE) while it had no significant effect on the yield of pole sitao intercropped at 60 DACE. Intercropping pole sitao to corn did not significantly affect corn yield. Early intercropping at 20 and 40 DACE gave low pole sitao yields while late intercropping at 60 DACE gave yield comparable to monoculture. The relative yield totals (RYT) for all intercropped systems were greater than one. This means intercropping corn and pole sitao provided yield advantage over monoculture. The highest RYT of 1.9 was obtained from intercropping pole sitao at 40 DACE with partial defoliation. This significant increase in total land productivity resulted likewise in higher income and return on investment. Intercropping pole sitao to corn at 60 DACE resulted in a high net income which was about 3.0 to 1.75 times higher than the income from monoculture corn and monoculture pole sitao, respectively. Relay cropping pole sitao to corn without additional support practices gave no marketable pole sitao pods. Tying adjacent corn plants enable corn stems to support the vines of pole sitao relayed to corn.
