Due to continuous and repeated retting of jute in the same water the retting water soon becomes dark and dirty. Jute retting in such water renders the fibre dark grey in colour. The present study explored the possibility of clarifying such dirty and dark coloured retting water by using different chemicals, such as, Potassium aluminium tartrate, Potassium aluminium sulphate, Sodium Sulphate, Sodium propane sulphate and Alkyl Benzene-sulphate at 1-5% concentration. Of these, Potassium Aluminium sulphate (Alum) at 1-5% clarified the dark retting effluent very promptly and effectively. Attempts were also made to clarify the dark retting effluent using water-hyacinth and Pistia stratioites by spreading them over the dark retting water. Both the plants clarified the water effectively in 10-15 days. None of the chemicals (Alum) and plant materials produced adverse effect on the retting process and bacterial flora; rather they reduced the retting period by 5 days and improved the fibre quality.
